Thorpe Hall

The true legend of this Hall is here for ye to read.

There are many ghosts to be seen in the Estates, Castles, or Gardens in various places around the world. Some appearing as White, Grey, even Blue Ladies, but very few appear dressed in green. An aristocratic Spanish beauty, dressed in a gown of that colour haunts Thorpe Hall, a 400 year old mansion situated on the outskirts of Louth.

In 1556,John Bolle, builder of Thorpe Hall, was engaged in the besieging of the port of Cadiz, in company with Sir Walter Raleigh, and the Earl of Essex. Along with being awarded a Knighthood for his bravery in this action, he apparently won the heart of a high-born Spanish lady, Donna Leonora Oviedo. As John was happily married, with the uptmost gallantry, he refused to compromise himself with the Lady Leonora. When the siege was over, Sir John left Cadiz with two gifts that the Lady presented to him. One being her portrait, the other a valuable gold chain to present to his wife as a token of her respect. It has been said that the Lady followed Sir John back to England, and realizing his happiness, stabbed herself in the gardens of Thorpe Hall. Since Sir Johns death, ten years later, the Spanish beauty has been seen looking for the lover who left her, as she roams the gardens of the Hall.
